It’s easy to forget that people communicate naturally in images. If GIFs, memes, and filters feel like new forms of expression, maybe it’s simply because words have won the day for millions of days running. Our forebears wrangled images into letterforms, squeezed languages into alphabets, and built tools to print identical copies of the same expressions. This was civilization.
